Tourist taxes in 2026, city by city
More cities charge visitors a nightly or daily fee every year. Here is what applies in 2026 and what is proposed for 2027.
| Place | Charge | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Amsterdam | 12.5% of the room price | Proposal to raise to 16% in 2027 and then by one point a year to 20%; cruise day visitors pay EUR 15. |
| Edinburgh | 5% of accommodation cost | From 24 July 2026, capped at a set number of consecutive nights. First visitor levy in the UK. |
| Barcelona | Up to about EUR 12 per night | Regional tax plus city surcharge, higher in 5-star hotels; cruise passengers also charged. |
| Venice | EUR 5 to 10 per day visitor | On selected days from April to July; overnight guests pay the hotel tax instead. |
| Greek islands | EUR 20 per cruise passenger | Santorini and Mykonos in peak season, EUR 12 in April, May and October; hotels pay a seasonal climate fee. |
| Kyoto | Tiered hotel tax from March 2026 | Up to JPY 10,000 per night at the most expensive hotels. |
| Norway | Up to 3% on overnight stays | Municipalities in tourism-heavy areas decide whether to apply it. |
| Bali | IDR 150,000 per trip | Paid once per visit, online or on arrival. |
How it is collected
Hotels and short-term rental platforms add the tax to the bill or collect it at check-in. Cruise fees are charged through the cruise line. Day-visitor fees, like Venice's, need an online registration and a QR code.
Rates change at the start of a calendar year or season. Check the city's official tourism site when you book, especially for 2027 stays.
